Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

They are prone to becoming bored and will seek out other ways to entertain themselves if their owners do not interact with them enough. Macaws that aren't socialized can become aggressive, and may even bite. It is essential that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds that love to play, climb and play. They need to spend at least 2 to 3 hours a day outdoors to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They love playing games, listening to music and learning tricks. They enjoy visiting playgrounds and parks as much as local restaurants and bars. They are not only a great pet but also a wonderful companion for children.
Despite their adoring nature, these birds are very loud and can be a nuisance to those who live near. They can make loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be a nuisance in condos and apartments or near young children who might be scared by their roar.
Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means males and females are difficult to tell apart. Due to this, the only way to reliably identify sex is through DNA testing. Once the sex of the birds is known the breeding process can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases and tricks. This isn't a simple process, and it is important that the owner is patient and realizes that this is not an undertaking to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can help to speed up the process and correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's care
For years activists have been calling for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to return to the sea.
Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, promised to come up with a plan with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her eventually to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could live the remaining days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean and not a concrete tank.
If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet
Like any animal species captive, a blue and gold macaw's health is contingent on a healthy diet. These beautiful birds need high-quality food, as well as lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A well-fed macaw in captivity can live up to 60 years. The majestic bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita, has been criticised for the quality of food that they feed killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound in 1970, and while the species is endangered in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that many say is too small for her.
Lolita's Health
While her beauty is evident Lolita's health continues decline. She has been a source of concern for animal welfare groups that wish to see her released to the wild. Lolita who has been living at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction for a long time. She has suffered from chronic illnesses and a crippling illness that has left her in a vulnerable condition.
The Miami Seaquarium which is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not provided information about Lolita's present health. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has posted monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita many are hopeful that she could be closer than ever to an unspoiled life. The new owner of Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to relocate the whale from her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.
The decision comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean and even reunite with the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately, these plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal issue.
